A New Battle in the TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) War

In our humble opinion, TMJ or Temporomandibular joint disorder, is one of the medical problems that does not receive enough public attention. That is why we were particularly pleased today to see that a bit of progress seems to have been made in its treatment.

There is no single cure or approach, but Dr. Nick Mobilia and Dr. Steven Shoshany have found that a synergistic approach to temporomandibular joint disorder (http://www.drshoshany.com/index.php) (TMJ) works best. The pair recently joined forces to help patients battle the condition in a rare pairing of their respective medical professions.

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ syndrome (www.elitedentalarts.com), refers to the chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. Because the disorder, which can result in pain and impairment, transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines — in particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy, and chiropractic (www.drshoshany.com)– there are potentially a myriad of different treatment approaches.

“Chiropractors and dentists do not normally work together, so this is a unique scenario” said Shoshany. “We’ve teamed up to help anyone who has a TMJ problem using a dynamic, all-inclusive approach.”

The disorder can cause discomfort in the jaw, neck and back - meaning that varied treatment (including chiropractic neck alignment) may be required. Considering the widespread impact of TMJ on the body, the partnership makes sense, said Dr. Mobilia.

“The key is a harmonious balance between the teeth, muscle, the jaw joint, cervical spine and associated structures,” Mobilia said.

When the jaw is misaligned, both the hard and soft tissues are affected and many physiological problems can result, such as headaches, jaw pain, neck and shoulder pain, tinnitus, and clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint. In a number of cases, these symptoms are the result of TMJ.

“TMJ’s origins and effects can impact many different parts and systems of the body. By working together (with Dr. Shoshany), our goal is to examine all of the issues regarding TMJ using our combined knowledge to paint a clearer picture for the patient.”

Additionally, both Dr. Mobilia and Dr. Shoshany utilize the latest technology to aid their unique form of patient care, such as the use of digital imagery.

“This unique, comprehensive approach — coupled with the most current in medical technology - is designed to benefit the patient,” Shoshany said.
